Course Summary

This professional development course is designed for Foundation Phase teachers to deepen their understanding and enhance their instructional strategies in the key content areas of Measurement, Data Handling, and Space and Shape. The course aligns with the CAPS curriculum, providing educators with comprehensive insights into these critical mathematics concepts.  

Measurement:
Teachers will explore methods to effectively teach measurement, focusing on concepts such as length, mass, capacity, time, and temperature. The course will guide educators on how to introduce these concepts in a practical and engaging manner, ensuring students grasp the importance of accurate measurement in real-world contexts. 

Data Handling:
This section of the course will equip teachers with the skills to teach students how to collect, organize, represent, and interpret data. Emphasis will be placed on developing learners’ ability to create and understand various types of graphs, charts, and tables. The course will also cover strategies for incorporating data handling activities into everyday classroom practice, making math relevant and exciting for young learners. 

Space and Shape:
Teachers will delve into the concepts of geometry, focusing on the identification and classification of 2D shapes and 3D objects. The course will provide strategies for helping students understand spatial relationships and properties of shapes, enhancing their spatial awareness and reasoning skills.  

Throughout the course, educators will engage with interactive content, including video tutorials, lesson plans, and practical classroom activities. The course also offers opportunities for teachers to collaborate and share best practices, ensuring a rich professional learning experience.  Upon completion, teachers will be better equipped to deliver high-quality mathematics instruction, fostering a strong foundational understanding in their learners.
